What is Saju? A 1-minute guide
Eight characters. That is all Nyang reads. Here is how.
Four Pillars
Your birth year, month, day and hour each become a pillar of two characters: a heavenly stem on top, an earthly branch below. Eight characters in all. That is your chart.
Day Master and your seat
The day pillar is the closest to you. Its top character, the Day Master (marked You), is you yourself: everything else in the chart is read in relation to it. The character right under it is your seat: where you sit, so it shows your partner and your home life.
Five Elements
Every character is Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. Around the circle, each one feeds the next. Across it, each one keeps another in check. What is heavy and what is missing shapes how you move.
Birth season
The month pillar is the climate you were born into. Same Day Master, different season, different person.
Luck cycles
Every 10 years a new pair of characters flows in (the 10-year luck cycle, daeun), and a new one each year. They do not change who you are. They change the weather around you.
Not your zodiac animal
The animal of your birth year is one character out of eight: the year branch. Korean Saju reads the whole chart, not the animal.
