What is Saju? A 1-minute guide
Four Pillars
Your birth year, month, day and hour each become a pillar of two characters: a heavenly stem on top, an earthly branch below. Eight characters in all. That is your chart.
Day Master
The top character of your day pillar. It stands for you. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it.
Five Elements
Every character is Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, Water feeds Wood. What is heavy and what is missing shapes how you move.
Birth season
The month pillar is the climate you were born into. Same Day Master, different season, different person.
Luck cycles
Every 10 years a new pair of characters flows in (the 10-year luck cycle, daeun), and a new one each year. They do not change who you are. They change the weather around you.
Not your zodiac animal
The animal of your birth year is one character out of eight. Korean Saju reads the whole chart, not the animal.
